We’re SO excited to welcome our first EVER Youth Board at Chester Zoo. This dynamic group of young people from a multitude of backgrounds, are on a mission to empower young people to take action for wildlife.

What does the zoo mean to you?

Chester Zoo has always felt special to visit not only for its vast size and animal collection, but also as I am not local to Chester, so every visit must be fulfilled! I remember my first visit when I was seven, and this experience (seeing elephants for the first time in person!) along with other zoo trips inspired me to become a zookeeper.

Why do you want to support our Chester Zoo Youth Board team?

I would love to help young people feel more connected to the environment, and to create awareness of the importance of conservation; both of which I feel are undervalued in our age range. Furthermore, I believe the Youth Board allows young people to share their ideas, especially supported by the Youth Governance Toolkit that other charities can utilise to motivate young people about their own policies and goals.

What do you hope to achieve from your role on the Chester Zoo Youth Board?

I am particularly interested in conservation and the role Chester Zoo plays towards population management and community outreach. The Youth Committee at Chester is the perfect starting point in working towards building my confidence in voicing my thoughts on such matters. I look forward to increasing conservation awareness for young people and supporting Chester Zoo as part of the committee.

What would you communicate to your peers to inform and engage them into
conservation projects within Chester Zoo and their wider local communities?

There are chances for us to speak out about our future for zoos and nature through committees such as Chester Zoo’s Youth Board, and these opportunities are growing as the youth board expands and encourages other charities to also engage with young people. Never turn down an opportunity!
